Philanthropy and AAHSA Quality First

Without adequate funding, it's difficult to provide quality care and services. That's why your philanthropic programs play an important part in your organization's work to put quality first.

AAHSA Quality First is a philosophy of quality and a framework for earning the public's trust in aging services. "Quality" and "trust" are, of course, cornerstones of effective fundraising programs.

The AAHSA Quality First 10 Elements of Quality are the framework that AAHSA members are using to achieve excellence and earn the public's trust. The Elements are described below as they apply to aging services' philanthropic programs:

  1. Commitment – Highlight your organization's status as an AAHSA Quality First Covenant signer to demonstrate your commitment to using funds to provide care and services that people deserve.


  2. Governance and Accountability – Adopt a strategic plan for your board members that both utilizes their knowledge and unleashes their potential as fundraisers. Ensure that your organization is in compliance with all laws and regulations that are applicable to fundraising.


  3. Leading-Edge Care and Services – Investigate new philanthropy models and activities that could be beneficial in your work.


  4. Community Involvement – Develop and publicize your aging services organization's social accountability program that highlights your organization's commitment and value to the community.


  5. Continuous Quality Improvement – Evaluate your current philanthropic programs and strategies and develop a plan to enhance and improve them.


  6. Human Resources Development – Organize a philanthropy training program for your staff members. The more they know about the quality care and services provided by your organization, the more likely they are to be good ambassadors for your organization and its mission.


  7. Consumer–Friendly Information – Develop clear, accurate and concise information about your organization's philanthropic activities for the people you serve and members of the community at large.


  8. Consumer Participation – Encourage your organization's residents, clients and family members to participate in your fundraising programs. Their involvement can help you enhance relationships you have and build powerful new ones.


  9. Research Findings and Education – Join and participate in AAHSA's Philanthropy Network to learn and share ideas and best practices that will strengthen your philanthropic programs.


  10. Public Trust and Consumer Confidence – Commit to a policy of outreach, openness and authenticity that will promote trust among all stakeholders, including potential funders.
