Proposed Rule Would Cut Medicare Payments to Skilled Nursing Facilities
A technical "recalibration" of Medicare rates just proposed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) would cut payments to skilled nursing facilities by $770 million, or 3.3 percent, in fiscal year 2009. CMS claims that nursing facilities would see only a net 0.3 percent cut in payments because of the annual market basket update the agency has recommended for next year. However, President Bush’s budget called for the market basket update to be withheld for next year and Medicare legislation which Congress must pass this year could affect the update. We strongly oppose any reduction in Medicare payment rates and we are making our objections known to both CMS and Congress. We will issue a special report later this week with more information and steps you can take to prevent this cut. Contact: Barbara Manard, (202) 508-9435.
