Homecoming Week Event Ideas

If you have other ideas, we'd love to hear from you. Tell us how your community is celebrating Homecoming Week.

Host a potluck dinner. Invite your residents, clients and staff to prepare their favorite family recipes for a meal. Have everyone submit their recipes and create a community cookbook to give as a gift or sell as a fundraiser.

Partner with your local Girl or Boy Scouts troop to make care packages and send them to troops in Iraq.

Sponsor an "Aging-Services 101" seminar. When it comes to our field, most people have more questions than answers. Organize an event where individuals can learn more about how they can help themselves or their loved ones receive the services that meet their needs and preferences. Distribute copies of AAHSA Quality First's Consumers' Guide to Quality Aging Services.

Organize a film festival. Who doesn't like watching classics like Casablanca or The Wizard of Oz? Screen these famous films at your organization and encourage community members to watch them with you. If the weather's nice, host an outdoor screening.

Prepare a meal for your police or fire squad. These important individuals protect us everyday. Why not honor them with a meal at your organization?

Sponsor a Family-Staff picnic. Your residents' families will get to meet you and see the great work your employee do at this fun event.

Offer free health services. Invite community members into your organization for free blood pressure checks, diabetes screenings or fitness assessments. They won't just leave with more information about their health, but your organization as well.

Celebrate educational successes. If your organization offers scholarships to local students or staff members, host a reception honoring their hard work. Invite local educational leaders to attend.

Put on a pampering party. Residents can enjoy manicures and makeovers with their daughters, granddaughters or nieces. Ask local beauticians or your salon's staff to donate their time. You can also invite home-based jewelry retailers, MaryKay consultants or Avon representatives to show off their merchandise. Designate a special time for the older woman to share their "pearls of wisdom" to the younger women.
