Ziegler Resources

Ziegler National CCRC Listing & Profile
In November 2009, Ziegler Capital Markets released its inaugural version of the Ziegler National CCRC Listing & Profile, a comprehensive directory of continuing care retirement communities accompanied by detailed research related to the continuing care sector of senior living. The publication is the first of its kind, as no organization has ever defined “continuing care retirement communities” (CCRCs) for the purposes of producing a national listing while simultaneously categorizing one of the more popular living options for seniors. Available from Ziegler for $95 for AAHSA members and CCRC owners and $195 for all others.

What AAHSA Wants the CFO To Know
At the May 2009 Ziegler AAHSA National CFO Workshop, AAHSA President & CEO Larry Minnix provided 10 key areas that, from AAHSA’s perspective, are a ‘must’ for the pro-active senior living CFO. See the highlights of his comment's in Ziegler's Z-News.

The AAHSA Ziegler 100
This unique listing and related research on the largest not-for-profit senior living multi-site organizations ranks not-for-profit senior living systems by total number of units in its primary ranking; it also provides rankings for affordable housing providers, health-care-sponsored senior living providers, and single-campus senior living providers. See Part 1 and Part 2 of the 2009 report.

Glossary of Senior Living Finance Terms
This publication is updated annually to provide a one-of-a-kind resource for board members, staff members and any others desiring to build their knowledge of key terms/concepts unique to senior living. Terms are categorized according to whether they are finance- or strategy-related. The finance section includes a separate area focused entirely on risk management financial terms (e.g., derivatives).

Demand Terminology: Finding Common Ground
Ziegler facilitated a task force with representatives from Brecht Associates, Dixon Hughes PLLC, Hamlyn Senior Research, New Life Management & Development and Parente Randolph to reach consensus on definitions of the basic terminology and methodology used in senior housing when conducting demand analyses for independent living units. See this white paper.

Ziegler CFO Hotline Covers Hot Topics
The Hotline is a unique information service available to CFOs and others interested in senior living. To use the Hotline a CFO submits a question that Ziegler forwards to members of the network, who then provide responses to Ziegler for tabulation and dissemination to the group. Topics include payroll and HR software, fee increases, tipping policies, and benevolence policies. Participate in the CFO hotline and see recent Hotlines.

Ziegler Z-News Covers Wide Range of Topics
Z-News is a weekly electronic publication that covers a breadth of operations and capital markets topics related to senior living including occupancy rates, environmentally-friendly communities, information technology and unit refurbishment. See recent issues or subscribe.

For CFOs, It’s All About Operations
The typical senior living CFO monitors and manages an ongoing checklist of critical operational, financial and compliance matters that guide the enterprise through its current and long-term budgetary cycles. The one area that dominates is operations – whether day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to-month or year-to-year. Presentations at the 2010 Ziegler AAHSA National CFO Workshop focused on operations at a system organization and a single-site organization.

The Journey Toward Affiliation
Senior living mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are a popular topic and the “Great Recession” has provided plenty of fodder for some diverse and sometimes emotionally-charged discussions. “The Journey Toward Affiliation” from Ziegler looks at how to evaluate whether your organization is ready for an affiliation. Hear the pros, the cons, and the lessons learned from those whose organizations have grown through affiliation.

Ziegler's Financing Update -- June 2010
For the traditional fixed rate borrower, the investor is very focused on credit quality and, as a result, the credit spread is comparatively wide now versus early 2008. For those interested in accessing attractive low-cost variable rate debt, a bank’s letter of credit is required and this market has changed dramatically over the past twelve months.
